Title: Cross-Layer SSD Optimizations by Exploiting 3D Flash Memory Characteristics
Abstract:
3D flash memory, which is based on vertical stacking of flash cells, is a key enabler in continuous capacity growth in flash-based solid-state devices (SSDs). In this talk, we share our experiences of developing cross-layer optimization techniques for 3D flash-based SSDs by exploiting the unique characteristics of 3D flash memory that are quite different from those of 2D flash memory. After presenting our key findings from an extensive characterization study using real 3D flash chips, we present two novel techniques that improve performance and lifetime of SSDs, respectively, by intelligently exploiting the 3D flash memory characteristics. As an extreme form of processing-in-storage systems, we introduce processing-in-flash (PiF), which accelerates data-intensive applications inside flash chips by exploiting advanced 3D flash chips.
